In college, Ms. Alexander considered becoming a spy, but, she says, ''My friends told me to forget it as I'd spill my guts if someone threatened to frown at a puppy.'' She now teaches creative writing and detective fiction at the College of William and Mary. Her latest chapbook is Observatory.
