Alex Galper b. 1971

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Mr. Galper has been writing poems and short stories since he can remember. Immigrating to the United States at the age of 19 did not change this; on the contrary, majoring in creative writing at Brooklyn College and being influenced mostly by American poets created a fusion in him of Russian pessimism, Jewish humor, and Western literary traditions and philosophy. Translations of his poems appeared in more than 30 magazines in the U.S. and the U.K. In his homeland, he is considered a cult underground poet whereas mainstream Russian literary magazines ignore him for his lack of respect for rhyme; heavy erotic imagery; and being ''too American.''
