Alfred Noyes (1880 – 1958)
Mr. Noyes was an English poet, best known for his ballads ''The Highwayman'' and ''The Barrel Organ.'' Later in life, as a result of increasing blindness, he began dictating his work. He is believed to be the originator of the homily: ''One jolly fellow remarks, 'Say, may I borrow your dictaphone?' To which his equally jolly companion retorts, 'Sorry, old boy, just use your finger like everyone else!'''
