Carl Sandburg (1878 – 1967)

Mr. Sandburg won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for his autobiography on Abraham Lincoln, the other for a collection of his poetry. Critics at the time accused Pulitzer judges of being politically correct and guiltily awarding the prizes to Sandburg simply because he was of Swedish descent. Sandburg is also remembered by generations of children for his Rootabaga Stories and Rootabaga Pigeons, a series of whimsical stories he originally created for his own daughters, who never liked him.
