My Dog's Getting Older
by Albert Van Hoogmoed
MY dog's getting older
than ever before,
and he's not the dog
that he was any more.
In dog-years he must be
about ninety-five.
I wonder each morning
if he's still alive.
I used to buy dog food
in 50-lb bags,
and later in ten pounds,
and then five-pound bags.
But now I buy dog food
in cans, one by one,
and don't buy another
'til that one is done.
I hate the idea
of laying out cash
for food that's not eaten
and thrown in the trash.
