SONATAS TO ORPHEUS, FOUR
The Lyre
by Graham Everett
YOU ride the river or it rides you
You'll be dead longer than you might ever live
So walk on the grass all you want
It'll cover you for a long, long time
Autumn turns and twirls its leaves
Skittering across early headlights
The sun low arcs the sky heading toward solstice
If we make it again this time around
We got caught naked in the back seat
By friends of your father who bought the pictures
But now I forget your face and what you said
Something about you thought summer could go on and on
It's gotten to where I don't miss anyone
At least not right now. There's a billboard
And behind it a cop looking to fill a quota
When we got everything do we begin again with nothing?
