Roach Sonnette

by Tom Lee Grayer

PA wants those old dried up brown ones
They smoke the best, lit up toasty red
He don't blame his woes on peeling paint

He keeps 'em in a tin topped with a swirling
mandala and a carved chicken bone to remind him
some things go and they're don't come back
Pa says he's to be somewhere but not right yet

Oh, where can I begin with these stories he tells
Which ones have you already heard, I keep forgetting

He knows that this ain't forever, else might be tho, so
don't get yer hopes up smiling at me like that
unless here, right now, he says to Ellie Mae
never mind nothing else
