Disney Cinderella

by Laura Bontrager

I am done with
wishing on stars and
listening to crickets.

the fairy godmother
never told me:
the glass slipper
leaves blisters and raw
pinched feet. a pumpkin
eventually rots and collapses
in. the mice stop making dresses
and eat through the palace,
one ballroom at a time.
and still, the floors need
a good scrubbing.

unhappily ever after,
that dancing fool of a prince
is a stranger.
a lifetime cannot be carved from
one night of foxtrot. when I
ask what he wants for dinner
now he turns to me and says,
You were so beautiful then,
what spell broke at midnight?
