A Family Should Eat Together

For Russell Edson

by Barry Dickson

A girl stood cooking her father.

Soon her younger brother came home from school. What’s for dinner?
he asked.

Dad, answered the sister. Oh no, said the brother, not parent
again — that's the second time this week.

The girl placed a dish containing dad on the table family style and
they began to eat.

It's not so good, said the brother.

Just shut up and eat your dinner, said the sister, so you can grow
up to be tough like your father.
