The Charge for the Purchase You Made

by Jon Wesick

EIGHT percent, nine percent
Twelve percent higher
Into a mountain of debt
Grows the six hundred
Charged on the purchase you made!
Your credit card balance
Into a mountain of debt
Grows the six hundred.

Was there no principal paid
Toward the purchase you made?
No, 'cause you're someone to screw
With money to plunder
Your payments go for interest and fees.
Though credit card terms mystify
Yours is not to reason why
Yours is but to buy and buy.
Into a mountain of debt
Grows the six hundred.

Merchants to the right of you
Merchants to the left of you
Merchants in front of you
Plied you with white Zinfandel
To set you up for the hard sell.
Into a mountain of debt,
Your credit score shot all to hell,
Grows the six hundred.

You flashed your checkbook bare.
The minimum payment not there.
Of interest changes beware.
Your low APR now revoked
You realize that you are broke.
If only you hadn't
Charged the six hundred.

Bills to the right of you
Bills to the left of you
Bills behind you
Money’s been squandered
In chapter eleven you'll dwell
Your credit score shot all to hell.
Into a mountain of debt
Grew the six hundred.

Your bankruptcy will never fade
Because lenders betrayed!
Even though you paid and paid!
Your bank account plundered
And bright future waylaid!
