Villainous

by Rebecca Grabill

I'M AT the tire store wishing fate
had better timing and the gods
were not so cruel to make me. Wait

until my tax return comes in, late
on Friday and I'd spent it. God!
I’m at the tire store wishing fate

would leave a little in the bank.
My wish today, those roads like logs
were not so cruel. To make me wait

for a repair, I'd rather traipse
across the street, go shopping—clogs.
I’m at the tire store wishing fate

had set me where they thought to make
a coffee shop. I sure wish God
were not so cruel. To make me wait

three hours with kids, bad coffee, fake
non-dairy cream. A pondless frog.
I'm at the tire store wishing fate
were not so cruel to make me wait.
