Song of Antarctic Death

by Hannah Rodabaugh

In the cold dark lands of the Antarctic!
It chews out a hole
Where it breathes while it loses its teeth.
It dies very early
Without any teeth—no blender to chew up the fish.
There’s no old seal
Homes out there with the penguins
So it just dies.
It dies because it has
No opposable thumbs or consciousness
That’s why it dies.
