An Office Romance Refrain

by Richard Cairo

EAT a pickle in your cu-bicle
another one of those days,
praying for your fate to be fickle,
have your turkey with a spread of malaise

In accounting there's this woman Claire
down the hall and to the right
In the elevator she gave you a stare
and now you're dreaming of her at night

At a meeting Claire flirts with you
breaking your day from its routine.
Work becomes the smell of citrus shampoo
and daydreaming by the copy machine

One Happy Hour with the office crew
Margaritas flow till way past eight
Everyone leaves and it's just you two
You start thinking, This is gonna be great

You hit it off, you're two of a kind!
You thank the gods for a change in your life.
Then chilling reality enters your mind —
You're going home to a dear little wife.

Claire sees that look. You're suddenly sober
She goes to the loo, you split the tab
Your voice is hoarse, the night is over
Shake her hand as she gets in the cab

You wait for your train alone at First Ave
Stare at the gum on the concrete floors
There are things in life you just can't have
''Stand clear of the closing doors.''

Eat a pickle in your cu-bicle
another one of those days
praying for your fate to be fickle
eat your turkey with a spread of malaise.
