Woodpecker Blues

by Daniel Sciarra

I slam my face against a tree
cause that's what comes naturally

I bore a hole to get some rest
cause I don't know how to build a nest

I wish sometimes that I could soar
and eat french fries down at the shore

pluck a seed from a fleur-de-lis
or drink the nectar left out for me

peck bread crumbs off a city street
or eat fresh fish caught with my feet

but I slam my face against a tree
that's just life for a guy like me
