Harvesting Flesh

by G. Nash

WITH chemicals galore at historic moments of vast impact
with various hormones tweaked toward perfection
we chose to evolve rather than wait out the next epoch

We've learned how to keep the skin from drying out
getting itchy or flaking off, not to mention keeping it
from oozing blood, from failing to fulfill its epi-task: serve
and protect the public license, so that we or someone else
can journey further into the unknown looking for knowledge
looking for answers, for meaning to match our wonder

We remember when the pursuit of pleasure consumed us
when peace was deemed necessary, a goal to obtain -- a way
to show that we've progressed, made civil the great disregard

Up here among the spires the dopamine overwhelms and
Death, nurtured on the post-modern, dines on filet mignon
